Does Islaam misunderstood what Trinity is comprised of? Missionaries repeats the classic objection that the Noble Qur’aan is inaccurate in describing the Church Trinity. They said that verse 116 from chapter 5 is saying that Christians believe in a trinity comprised of: FATHER, Jesus, and Mary, while the fact of the matter is that the church trinity is: Father, Son and Holy spirit. Allah will say: O Jesus the son of Mary! Didst thou say unto men, worship me and my mother as gods in derogation of Allah? He will say: Glory to Thee! never could I say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, thou wouldst indeed have known it. Thou knowest what is in my heart, though I know not what is in Thine. For Thou knowest in full all that is hidden. It is an old objection that Muslims have answered hundreds of times, but stubborn Christian apologists would not listen to it. The verse was not, by any means, talking about the trinity, it was rather mentioning that some of those who worshipped Jesus worshipped Mary too, calling upon her in times of need. There are two plausible explanations: A. Islaam does not differentiate between orthodoxy and Heresy in Christianity, because it labels all of them as polytheism (Shirk). Therefore, the mention of the worship of Mary in this verse might be alluding to the practices of some particular Christian sects. We read in The Encyclopedia of Islaam, written by many famous orientalists who were extremely skeptical about Islam: “Maracci has made a reference to Epiphanius, Adv. Haereses, Haeres. Ixxviii, § 23, where this author speaks of women in Arabia who venerated Mary as God, and offered her cakes, from which the heresy is often called that of the Collyridians. Sale, in his Preliminary discourse, 45, mentions the Mariamites, who worshipped a Trinity consisting of God, Christ and Mary, referring to a passage in the work of al-Makin(93-179). Mary as God among Christians: George Sale in his Preliminary Discourse on Quran mentions a certain group named Collyridians that had origins in Arabia who introduced the Virgin Mary as God. He writes; “Among the Arabs …the Collyridians …introduced the Virgin Mary for God, or worshipped her as such, offering her a sort of twisted cake called collyris, whence the sect had its name.” He continues; ‘This notion of the divinity of the Virgin Mary was also believed by some at the Council of Nicaea, who said there were two gods besides the Father, viz., Christ and the Virgin Mary, and were thence named Mariamites.’ (Preliminary Discourse, Section II, Quran vol.1) Similarly John William Draper writes; “…the Marionites regarded the Trinity as consisting of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Virgin Mary; the Collyridians worshiped the Virgin as a divinity, offering her sacrifices of cakes;” (History of the Conflict between Religion and Science, Chapter 3) Classical Muslim scholar Ibn Hazm also mentions a sect Al-Barbarania who believed in Jesus (PBUH) and his Mother as God. (Al-Milal wal-Nahl 1/27) All these facts establish the solid basis on which Noble Qur’aan condemns the notion of taking Virgin Mary as God! So, in conclusion, there is no point calling the modern day trinitarian Christianity as true Christianity and all others as false since the evolution of this doctrine itself is very late. The early Christianity had bizarre beliefs about their doctrine as well as their Scriptures. Moreover the Jesus(As) and early Church Fathers were utterly unaware of this doctrine and they never practiced it. Would then the modern day true Christianity brand them as heretics?
