Does research into Autism interest you? I know it is difficult to keep abreast of all the work being carried out in various areas and sometimes it is just reassuring to learn when research activity is increasingly pushing practice and understanding of Autism forward. This contact from Autism NI is an opportunity to become more involved. Oxford University has directly approached Autism NI to spread the word across the Six Counties about specialised research they are involved with. The research team has asked us to begin a conversation within Northern Ireland to create interest and stimulate involvement in a scheme that has been underway in Scotland, England and Wales for some time. Brain research provides the key to fully understanding autism. All leading autism researchers recognise this but very few of the people who have autism or their family members are aware of the research, which examines the ‘autistic brain’ in very fine detail. This detail is only possible through post-mortem research and so a brain bank for the UK has been set up at Oxford University to enable researchers internationally to clarify what is different about the brains of people with autism. This understanding will lead to real improvement in people’s lives. Please click brainbankforautism.org.uk to find out more Autism NI appreciates that this subject is extremely sensitive and touches upon issues that few of us wish to think about - never mind talk about or get involved in. Yet, the history of medicine and research has depended upon the selfless and the pragmatic amongst us. The website (brainbankforautism.org.uk) provides information on the brain bank’s work and background detail from individuals such as Lorna Wing who is a signed up donor. I hope that you can help this important research by bringing this to the attention of as many people as possible and by following up directly.
