Doesnt get much better than this--orchestral friends and percussionists--please read and express your thoughts here or private message: Dear Jeffrey, I would very much like to write a concerto-type work for solo piano, solo percussion and orchestra. Its an unusual combination of solo instruments and all sorts of musical ideas burst into consciousness. Of course, the piano was always, and still remains, a stellar solo instrument with a vast repertoire, but in my professional lifetime I have enjoyed the incredible growth of orchestral percussion performance. Percussionists have moved so far beyond the earlier handful of instruments used in the orchestral repertoire to literally embracing the world. I have known percussionists who joined Samba schools in Rio, Gamelan ensembles in Bali, studied drumming in Africa, and who can easily incorporate jazz elements into modern classical styles. They are open to everything and, truth be told, they have become some of the best musicians in the orchestra. It would be a special pleasure for me to work with the percussionists of the consortium to craft a piece that was responsive to their ideas; that would feature some of their favorite instruments and would challenge their best performance.
