Dog of the Day The Galgo Espanol (The Spanish Greyhound) Looking very much like a Greyhound - but it is not – it is however, a very old breed dating back to the time of the Moors in Spain around 800 AD. The breed is used as a sight hound to hunt hare and other game. The coat is easily maintained and can be of any color -- but most often is found to be fawn, brindle and black spotted. Galgos are friendly around small children and animals if socialized early. In spite of its large size – normally an indicator of a short life span in dogs -- the Galgo it is long lived –averaging 12 to 14 years. Another feature of this large dog is the fact that it does not need a lot of exercise – two or three 20 minute walks per day suit this breed very well – the rest of the day you will find them snoozing on the couch.
