Don Gabriel Mexican Restaurant Review 11/6/14 7:53 PM I have seen several people in the last few weeks ask about this place and no one seems to have gone there yet or had time to review it. My local experience with Mexican food has always been a well established restaurant near Middletown and frankly, I find their food to be VERY heavy. I didn’t like it. It’s not authentic Mexican, rather some sort of TexMex fusion. So it was with some trepidation that I decided to try out Don Gabriel in Liberty, NY, a new place open just a few months ago. I have to admit that Don Gabriel, who happens to be the chef and his delightful wife Angelica changed my mind about Mexican food. This is a family run place and as Gabriel explained to us he cooks as he cooks for his family, which is totally believable as after they had served us and we were nearing the end of our delicious meal, they brought out bowls and plates of the same fare, and sat around at the table next to us eating their evening meal. The food is all fresh – nothing prepackaged. Even the Nachos/Chips are hand cut from tortillas and deep fried in the kitchen. Onto the food. After looking over the very colorful and artistically put together menu, Pilar decided to try the Tostadas con Chorizo which is basically a plate of three Crispy Tortillas, each smothered in Spicy Mexican Sausage, Mole (refried beans,) sour cream, cheese and lettuce. A large meal all by itself. She also had a side order of Chips con Salsa (Pico de Gallo) made out of freshly chopped/diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro and chili peppers. This stuff was made right there and we could tell by it’s absolute freshness. I decided to start with a plate of Nachos Regulares, which came smothered in cheese with slices of fresh pickled jalapeño peppers accompanied by a nice mound of freshly made guacamole. I tried a Picadita con Carnitas which was a thicker tortilla smothered in roast pork with cheese and sour cream. My main dish was Bistec Encebollado, (thin steaks with sautéed onions,) which also came with seasoned potatoes, yellow rice and refried beans. Everything was delicious….if I may be so bold, YUMMY! I feel I must point out the refried beans in particular. Other times I have had refried beans, they have been so thick and heavy that I grew to dislike and avoid them at all costs. The refried beans at Don Gabriel’s are so light I gobbled down every little bit which was on my plate. They served our meals with plenty of warm, soft tortillas on the side, and some sort of homemade hot sauce which had the faint odor of chipotle rising from it. They don’t serve desserts yet, but with the plates of food we ate, I daresay we did not have any room for dessert!! All in all, it was a very pleasant experience, with good food, very welcoming hosts, a simple yet warm environment, and as always the best company I could have, my wife and best friend, Pilar. They don’t take credit cards so have cash. This is a rated G restaurant so there is no liquor or wine, but that’s perfectly fine. Great for breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, from singles to families.
