Donald Fiske, in 1949, was the first person to extract five replicated factors using rating variables drawn from Cattell’s work. Building on Fiske’s work, Ernest Tupes and Raymond Christal, in 1961, reanalyzed rating data from eight samples and identified five relatively strong and recurrent factors. They labelled these factors as – (1) surgency (or assertive talkativeness), (2) agreeableness, (3) dependability, (4) emotional stability, and (5) culture. This was the first set of personality factors to be called the ‘Big Five’.
