Donald Lee Sykes SHALERSVILLE-MANTUA On December 20, 1925 God gave us the gift of Donald Lee Sykes, born to Norman and Frances Dora (Confer) Sykes in Canton, Ohio. On Saturday July 27, 2013 God’s gift was returned surrounded by his daughters in Shalersville. On September 4, 1948 he married Flossie Matheny who preceded him in death in 2001. His son, Donald W. Sykes also preceded him in death in 2000. Donald is survived by his loving daughters, Judith Sykes Willett of Loveland, CO; Frances Weiss and Karen (Ray) Siders both of Columbus and Sandi (Bill) Fordyce of Shalersville; brothers William Sykes of Northfield and David Sykes of Washington; grandchildren Amy Canaday, Jennette Edwards, Shawn Stewart, Scott Stewart, Phillip Grimes, Clark Roman, Nick Young, Chris Young, Danny Siders and Laura Dabrowski; and fourteen great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by siblings Norman Sykes, Jr., Frances Eva Cooper, H.Anne Yost, K. Virginia Hladky, Helen Vail, Daniel Sykes, and Naomi Elizabeth Sykes. Donald’s occupation was carpenter/construction, retiring in 1989 from Cleveland State University. Donald served in the Merchant Marines in World War II with brothers Norman and Daniel, beginning his love affair with boats. One of Donald’s greatest gift was his sense of humor which he taught his children. An avid lover of music he learned to play cornet at The Salvation Army at the age of seven. He learned to play all brass instruments and taught many children. Throughout his life he attended several Salvation Army churches in the area, most recently attending the Ravenna Corps. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 5:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service, St. Rt. 44 at the corner of 4668 Pioneer Trail, Mantua. Services for Donald will be held Wednesday July 31, 2013, 10:00 A.M. at The Salvation Army, 268 West Main Street, Ravenna, Ohio 44266 with Capt. D. Stanford officiating. Final resting place will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg, Ohio where he will receive Military Honor’s. His obituary can be viewed at greenfamilyfuneralhome.
