Where will AFA National Aerospace Award presentations be held? Award recipients will be notified if their award will be presented in the Washington, DC, area at the Opening and Award Ceremony held in conjunction with AFA’s 2014 Air & Space Conference and Technology Exposition. The award ceremony is scheduled for Monday, September 15, at the Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center, 201 Waterfront Street, National Harbor, MD 20745. By mid-July, AFA will have additional information to advise award recipients regarding attendance. The hotel’s website, gaylordhotels/gaylord-national/ (by clicking on Directions and Transportation) provides directions to the hotel from Reagan National, Dulles International and Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) airports and other driving directions. 3. Can award recipients attend the 2014 Air & Space Conference events? Yes. To attend the AFA 2014 Air & Space Conference, award recipients or their sponsoring organizations are invited to register. Military and DoD Government – Conference registration fees are waived (no cost). Non-DoD Government – State, Federal and Local Government employees of any Government Agency (other than the Department of Defense) will pay a conference fee of $495 for the full conference or $200 per selected day. Alternatively, all award recipients, including crews and team award recipients can attend the following events at Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center at no charge: Monday’s continental breakfast Monday’s Opening and Award Ceremony Technology Exposition Please note: advanced registration is required so that tickets may be prepared. A photo I.D. is required to pick up tickets at the Conference registration desk. Check-in at the award recipient briefing, prior to the Awards Ceremony, is required. 4. Is there a limit on how many crew or team members may attend the award presentation ceremony? No. We encourage all team and crew members to attend the ceremony. If your crew or team is larger than 15 people, contact Lynette Cross about how many may be on stage. To facilitate this, we ask that a single team or crew member be our point of contact (POC) and keep the AFA Award Staff advised of members attending from their organization. Each award recipient will receive a package of information about the award and the Conference. The package will include information on how to register for the Conference and how to reserve a hotel room. 6. Who presents the awards? AFA’s Chairman of the Board, along with various co-presenters, present National Aerospace Awards at the Conference. Traditionally included as co-presenters are the Air Force Chief of Staff, the Secretary of the Air Force and MAJCOM Commanders. 7. Can family members and other guests attend the award ceremony? Young children are not allowed to attend the ceremony. However, we encourage award recipients’ other family members and guests to attend. Each person attending the ceremony must register on our website. These registrations will be used to prepare the appropriate badges. 8. Can unit commanders and supervisors participate in award presentations? Presentations are made to award recipients. AFA arranges the co-presenters as described in #6 above. 9. What is the uniform requirement? For the Monday morning award presentations and for all Conference sessions: service dress. Civilians should wear a business suit/dress as appropriate. For the Reception honoring the 12 Outstanding Airmen and for the Outstanding Airmen Dinner (ticket required): service dress. Civilians should wear a business suit/dress as appropriate. For the Air Force Anniversary Reception or the Air Force Anniversary Dinner (ticket required): mess dress or black tie, as appropriate. 10. Does AFA expect award recipients to give acceptance remarks? No. The Monday morning Opening and Awards Ceremony is scripted in such a way that award recipients are not asked to remark. 11. Which airport is closest to the Conference site? The Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is the closest airport to the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. 12. What about the metro, taxi or car rental? Visit our website at afa.org for more details. 13. Can family members take pictures during award presentations and will AFA provide courtesy copies of presentation photos? An official photographer will take a photo of all award presentations. We will provide a complimentary photo to award recipients. Family members can take photos as long as they do not interfere or interrupt the time sequence of award presentations or interfere with the official photographer. 14. What happens if an emergency delays or prevents an award recipient from making it to the award presentation? If possible, the award recipient should try to contact us. Call Lynette Cross at 703-247-5800 ext. 4807, or, if it is September 15th through 17th, call the hotel at 301-965-4000 and ask for the AFA Operations Office. 15. How can I get funding information for travel orders? Each award recipient’s organization or unit is responsible for all travel and hotel expenses to attend the Conference or awards presentation. 16. How are AFA Awards publicized? AFA publishes a list of awards and recipients on the Air Force Association website, and we also prepare a press release announcing award recipients. AIR FORCE Magazine lists award recipients in its November issue. 17. Will my chain of command be notified of the award? Yes. AFA notifies Air Force Headquarters and appropriate Major Command commanders after award selections are made. AFA also sends congratulatory letters to award recipients and copies to the nominating commander as identified on the award submission. 18.
