Dont be tempted to justify a restrictive action by the state (government) based on what someone needs. The only thing a person needs is food, water, and shelter. Allowing this reasoning (needs based law) to grow can only serve to restrict every aspect of our lives, hardly the desired outcome of an ostensibly free country. No one needs a sports car, no one needs big screen televisions, no one needs to own more than an acre of land (unless youre a farmer, with the proper permits and such, of course), and on and on it goes. You can already see things like this happening, if you want to see. It is not the role of government (at least not a government I want in power) to determine what you or I need.
