Dont forget the Grand Opening is June 15th. THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE DAWKIN’S TRAIL AREA By Randall Risner The trail runs through a beautiful section of Eastern Kentucky. This area is heavily forested and much of the trail traverses remote terrain. Wildlife flourishes here in abundance from small rodents to bobcat, Cougar, bear and elk. Be aware of this and also that several species of venomous snakes are common. Most common and aggressive of these is the copperhead; others include various types of rattlesnake, cotton mouth vipers and rarely a coral snake. The judicious use of common sense will prevent most problems. Never travel the trail alone, always have one or more companions. Never walk the trail after dark without a light as snakes naturally seek the warmth of any sun exposed surface when the night air cools. Always have a ‘what if’ plan, be prepared and realize cell service will be spotty at best. If you need help don’t hesitate to ask a local but be certain to identify yourself and the nature of your situation. Understand that most people will be wary of strangers but will soon come to your aid when they determine you are not a threat to them. You will find most Eastern Kentuckians to be warm wonderful people as long as you are respectful of them. Respect Nature, respect property rights, respect the people and enjoy the Dawkin’s Trail.
