Dont forget to write to political representatives who can affect views on which you have opinions. If ALP votes against metadata collection in the senate on 27 October, itll need a rethink in the house of reps. #useyourletterstogetdown Senator John Faulkner Senator for New South Wales 1/1 Park Avenue Drummoyne NSW, 2047 [email protected] Thursday 9 October 2014 Dear Senator, I hope you’re well. I’m writing in regards to the upcoming voting session (27 October) regarding the mandatory storage of online “metadata” of Australian citizens. It is obviously a highly charged issue due to the unprecedented nature of the powers being granted, and the current media / political climate re terrorism. I was wondering how you were planning to vote (if you don’t mind my asking)? Will it be ALP-wide or individual? In any case I ask you to please, please consider voting against the passage of this bill. I urge you to look at the example of Germany, whose federal court found in 2010 that the mandatory collection of data was unconstitutional, violating the constitution’s guarantee of secrecy of correspondence. Its obvious why such a clause was included in their constitution - it was only 30 years ago that their mail was being steamed open and phones being bugged by the GDR secret police or “Stasi. The Germans lived for so long without privacy from their government and so know that privacy has a huge value. The extra “safety” from terrorism being sold by the EU directive was not worth the cost of giving it their long fought for privacy. We haven’t had the ordeal of living under such a tyrannical institution as the Stasi or KGB, but we still should not give up our privacy for so small and unquantifiable a price as “being able to sleep safely at night” or whatever else the LNP spin doctors have come up with. And metadata is HUGE. It’s basically your whole digital life that is being stored and perused by whichever interested agency. I would love to discuss this with you further, if you would like. My number is ____________ Thanks very much for reading, Dan McNamee
