Dont get me wrong...it literally breaks my heart when I hear that - TopicsExpress

Dont get me wrong...it literally breaks my heart when I hear that someone dear to me or someone that they know is battling cancer. Along with war, and other horrible things - I would like to see nothing more than see its existence wiped off of the face of the Earth. What hurts even more - companies slapping a pink ribbon on their carcinogen-laden (linked to cancer) products in efforts to fund cancer research or simply using the disease as a reason to increase revenue. I apologize if that sounds harsh, but just take a minute to let it all sink in. Take the NFL Breast Cancer Initiative for example...after everyone gets their cut, only $8 out of every $100 goes to actual research. True, you will be wearing the pink merchandise and reminding others that they should do something too, but maybe, just maybe, your $100 could have been utilized a little more wisely. Many times the companies selling the pink products do not even list donation amounts (or percentages) or even list which organizations will receive the donations or how those donations will be used. Also, in 2011, Susan G. Komen for the Cure commissioned a perfume called Promise Me that contains unlisted chemicals that are regulated as toxic and hazardous, have not been adequately evaluated for human safety, and have demonstrated negative health effects. Although Komen said they would reformulate future versions of the perfume, without official adoption of the precautionary principle, there is no guarantee that future versions would be better. Instead of feeling inclined to buying that item with the pink ribbon, I would encourage you to instead donate your time and money into something that directly contributes to actual research, prevention (and educate others on how to reduce toxin load, etc.), and providing services to those who are fighting the disease, survivors, or to families who did not survive. I am pretty sure that many of us can name at least one person or even a few. #ThinkBeforeYouPink
