Dont know if I like this forecast! Alerts for: Burin Peninsula Statements 4:15 PM NST Saturday 03 January 2015 Special weather statement in effect for: Burin Peninsula A wintery system will affect Newfoundland Sunday night through to Tuesday. An intensifying low pressure system will track eastwards across Southeastern Labrador on Monday. Associated with this system, snow will start over Southwestern Newfoundland Sunday afternoon and spread across the remainder of the island in the evening. Generally 10 centimetres of snow is expected across the island with possibly as much as 15 centimetres for areas in central and along the Southwest Coast by Monday. This snow is expected to be heavy at times and rapidly accumulate before it changes through ice pellets and then to rain by Monday morning. 5 to 10 millimetres of rain is expected across most of the island except along the Southwest Coast where 15 to 20 millimetres is possible. It is possible that precipitation over the northern areas of the Great Northern Peninsula will remain as snow, especially if the low tracks further south. Strong southeasterly winds will gust between 60 and 100 km/h ahead of the low and shift to equally as strong southwesterlies in the systems wake. Wind warnings have been issued for the west coast where the strongest winds are likely to occur. In addition, a Wreckhouse wind warning has been issued where wind gusts of 120 km/h are forecast Sunday evening into the overnight. Due to these strong winds, some areas could potentially have significant blowing snow for a brief period before temperatures rise and snow changes to rain Sunday night into Monday morning. The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended. Please monitor the latest forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada at WWW.WEATHER.GC.CA
