Dont let the Best be the enemy of the Good may be one of the worst phrases of modern politics. Politicians are prone to cowardess and deliberate inaction. They use this mantra to cover their lack of courage in never trying for the best and they label bad things as good. Sometimes compromises produce terrible combinations of ideas that are not meant to work together and form something unworkable that is actually not better than nothing. Sometimes you need to fight and win or fight and lose. Fighting and giving up is not accomplishing the best, the good, or even the okay. Fear to fight at all accomplishes nothing. Conservatives need to be fighting for the Fair Tax, not giving tax increases for the promise of negotiations on spending cuts later maybe while taking billions of dollars in pork for their districts. If liberals believe in gun control, then they need to put up what they really believe and fight for it to either win or lose. Dont put up a background check bill that is written like an apology which is weaker than the laws already in effect in some states and then complain that it is the Republicans fault you didnt even try. If you believe in Universal Health Care, put that up and fight for it. Dont create a nightmare like the ACA and then sell it after the fact with Well, its better than nothing. If you believe in marriage equality, put up a national marriage equality bill and fight for it. Dont put up a rent bill that doesnt change anything as a token and a trap. Fight until one side wins for once. Occasionally we will benefit by going for the best.
