NGOCC Executive Director Engwase Mwale said the NGO Act in its current state went against democratic principles. Mwale said the law was draconian in nature and needed to be done away. Government has directed NGOs to register under the law with those that have not complied served with notices of deregistration. “We are not against self regulatory mechanism, what we are against t is a mode that puts so much power in the hands of government, with regards to composition of the board, requirement that we re-register every five years, with regards to some of the criminal sanctions that are provided in for in the NGO Act,” she said. “We are saying in this day and age when we should be all be promoting a democratic dispensation, we do not need restrictive laws like what we have in the current NGO Act.” The move is seen as an attempt to stifle critical NGOs as government works to eliminate any forms of dissent. zambiareports/2014/06/10/dont-impose-ngo-act-cso-cautions-pf/
