Don’t panic over new smoke alarm law Posted on November 7, 2013 by Michael Nemeth • 3 Comments Working detectors probably won’t need immediate replacement Under a law taking effect Jan. 1, 2014, you’ll need to install smoke detectors that can keep working on the same battery for 10 years or more. But chances are, you won’t have to do it yet. You only need to install the 10-year battery models when: A current detector isn’t working. Work is done to a unit requiring a permit – and when the value of the work totals $1,000 or more. In 2016, more requirements take effect, with smoke detectors required in all bedrooms and other rooms where people sleep, in accordance with state fire marshal regulations. Rental property owners are responsible for testing and maintaining smoke alarms. When it comes time to replace one, you’ll need to install a smoke detector that: Displays the date of manufacture on the device Provides a place on the device where the date of installation can be written Incorporates a hush feature Incorporates an end-of-life feature with notice that the device needs replacing If battery operated, contains a non-replaceable, non-removable battery capable of powering the smoke alarm for at least 10 years. Reply November 8, 2013 at 9:42 am If you install new or replacement smoke detectors before Jan. 1, they can take standard batteries. But once we’re into 2014, any new or replacement smoke detectors installed that are battery operated must have a 10-year lifespan, regardless of location in the unit. In 2016, sleeping areas must have smoke detectors — and they must meet the state fire marshal’s regulations.
