Don’t talk to strangers A poem by Lapieh Landu 9th December 2011 It was a Monday, a clear sky Monday On my way to school, good bye mama, goodbye Singing, dancing, rhyming I’m reminded Mama said don’t talk to strangers Just passed the market, so much hustle I smile, I wave, I skip, I hop My bangles clatter with joy I’m reminded Mama said don’t talk to strangers I hear the whistling from beside the road A tall young man, walks towards me Hands me a drink, no harm, it’s just a drink I’m reminded Mama said don’t talk to strangers What’s in the water? What’s in the darn water? I can’t see, I feel numb, I fall asleep I hear him mumble, I hear him grumble I’m reminded Mama said don’t talk to strangers No more I hear a sound, Am I dead? I feel nothing, I see nothing, I hear nothing Still my heart throbs through my chest I’m reminded Mama said don’t talk to strangers I hear something! I hear running water! I am alive, I am alive! Mama I am alive! My eyes open and all I feel is pain I’m reminded Mama said don’t talk to strangers Why all this blood? I never had seen it before! Why all these bruises? I feel sick! I don’t understand why I lay near this river I’m reminded Mama said don’t talk to strangers I leap, I crawl, I stumble and I fall I find my way home, no school today Mama squinting from afar, tears fills her eyes She remember she tell me today Baby, don’t talk to strangers Mondays, now I hate and men I despise My womanhood forced upon me Not welcomed in celebration But inflicted by a deceitful man Mama cries as she bathes me Mama curse with every bruise she sees I still don’t understand for all I know I shouldn’t have talked to that stranger!
