Dora Gerson (1899-1943) was a popular German-Jewish singer, actress and silent movie star back in 1920s and 1930s. Dora Gerson was born 1899 into a German-Jewish family in Berlin. Early 1920s Dora Gerson played in a few German silent movies, which today is considered as lost. Dora Gerson performed in many cabarets in Berlin until 1933. After 1933 Dora Gerson was only allowed to perform in small Jewish theaters in Berlin. Also Dora Gerson made a few 78rpm recordings at the Jewish owned record compagny Lukraphon after 1933. Lukraphon was a Jewish record compagny in Germany, owned by Kulturbund Deutscher Juden (Cultural Federation of German Jews), and existed between 1933-38. Kulturbund Deutscher Juden existed between 1933-41. Lukraphon recorded and manufactured several 78rpm recordings in German, Hebrew and Yiddish, recorded by very talented Jewish singers and musicians, who after 1933 were forbidden to perform and record in public. The Lukraphon records were only sold inside Kulturbund Deutscher Juden, and didnt reach the commercial German record and music stores. 1936 Dora Gerson and her husband settled in the Netherlands, where she gave birth to two children. When Germany attacted the Belelux-countries on May 10, 1940, Dora Gerson together with her husband and children fled to France in an attempt to enter neutral Switzerland, but the escape failed and they ended up in the Drancy Camp/Ghetto in Paris. February 1943, Dora Gerson, her husband and children were deported from Drancy to Auschwitz and killed in the gas chambers upon arrival. Only a very few Lukraphon 78rpms did survive WW2 in Europe, and these 78rpms are very rare today. Maby a few copies also were taken to Palestine and North-America by Jewish immigrants from Germany in mid 1930s. Sid Kays Fellows was a popular German dance orchestra founded 1926 by the German-Jewish musicians Sigmund Petruschka (Sid) and Kurt Kaiser (Kay). The orchestra was very popular and played before 1933 in the popular entertainment place Haus Vaterland located at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. 1933 Sid Kays Fellows were outlawed by the nazis and from later in 1933 only allowed to perform inside Kulturbund Deutscher Juden. 1938 Sigmund Petruschka emmigrated to Palestine (later Israel) where he died 1997, aged 94. I havent been able to find much informations about Kurt Kaiser. I hope he managed to get out of Europe before 1939, but his fate remains unknown. Vorbei (Its Over). Singing: Dora Gerson. (Singing in German). Sid Kays Fellows. Recorded ca. 1934-35 at Lukraphon in Berlin, Germany. youtube/watch?v=oW0rm0IymsI
