Doralice Album Fundraiser Update #1 The song that started Doralice as a band is the song that starts the album (and the majority of our live shows)-- “Hal.” We are huge fans of independent filmmaker Hal Hartley (Trust, Henry Fool), and the whimsy & sweetness of the piece reminded us of Mr. Hartley’s eclectic, self-written scores (of which we are particularly obsessed with No Such Thing). Incidentally, Hal Hartley just started a Kickstarter project to fund the 3rd movie in his Henry Fool/Fay Grim series—check that out too. Our toy piano was acquired specifically for “Hal,” and when it arrived via Ebay the G note was broken (non-playing toy piano notes are surprisingly brutal sounding, they could be used for percussion on a Big Black song). Gs happen a lot in “Hal” so writing “around it” was interesting but leant a really cool, floating sense to the piece. The idea of melody “not quite settling” on the note you’d expect ended up being a hallmark of the writing for Doralice. The toy piano was recorded in a make-shift echo-chamber (aka empty room with hard floor) by Ian Pellicci at Tiny Telephone, while the reverb of the violin is from a mic placed in the long echoey hallway outside the tracking room. We love reverb, it’s all over these recordings, and nearly all of it was natural as such. (Occasionally the Tiny Telephone coffee grinder & ambulances from SF General can be heard in that track, lending a bit of je ne sais quoi.) Track credits: Rima Ash (violin, toy piano), Yates Brown (guitar, composition), Kurt Ribak (bass)
