Dorothea Lang 1895 - 1965 Was a pioneer influential with humanizing documentary photography, photo journalism, and street photography. Dorothea was educated in photography at Columbia University and eventually migrated to the Berkeley Hills of California opening a successful portrait studio. As the great depression gripped the nation Lang turned her camera lens from the studio to the street. Her works focused on sharecroppers, the homeless, displaced farm families , migrant workers, and Japanese internment camps. Ms. Langs best known picture is titled Migrant Mother as seen below. Dorothea Lang later wrote,I saw and approached the hungry and desperate mother, as if drawn by a magnet. I do not remember how I explained my presence or my camera to her, but I do remember she asked me no questions. She said they have been living on frozen vegetables from the surrounding fields, and birds that the kids Killed. These photographs and her story published in the San Francisco newspaper resulted in federal authorities rushing aid to the tent camps to prevent starvation. In 1945 Dorothea Lang was invited by Ansel Adams to accept a faculty position at the first Fine Art Photography Department at the California School of Fine Arts.
