Dorothy Zellner: Civil rights, from Freedom Summer to Palestine ● Veteran civil rights activist Zellner is still fighting for human rights, but today her main focus is in solidarity with the people of Palestine ● What happened to us as Jews is directly traceable to people standing idly by, she says in an interview with GRITtv. Zellner went on to join the Civil Rights Movement, working with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) as an assistant to Julian Bond and recruiting activists for Freedom Summer, which she spent in Greenville, Mississippi. Zellner is still fighting for human rights, but today her main focus is in solidarity with the people of Palestine. The justice for Black people living in this country, and the justice for Palestinians are, to me, on a continuum, and they are all beginning to merge into one big struggle, she says. That struggle, is, can the ordinary people of the world control their lives and have equity? ● Zellner is a founding member of Jews Say No, a volunteer for Jewish Voice for Peace and a board member for the Jenin Freedom Theatre in the West Bank. ● As protests for justice for Michael Brown continue in Ferguson, and Israel violates the ceasefire in Gaza, the connections that Zellner draws between these struggles could not be more relevant. ● grittv.org/?video=dorothy-zellner-civil-rights-from-freedom-summer-to-palestine
