To do it correctly in my opinion and experience as a plastic laminator in a tool and die fixture shop we would relieve air pockets with a pointed awl etc. In the case of 5200 and 3 pieces of wood you would drill holes in strategic spots allowing air to escape and 5200 to ooze out.
