Downtown today was terrible. I had 50 pairs of gloves and needed more! Several got coats and many got hoodies ( I could have given out 20-30 more hoodies as these folks need to layer to attempt to stay warm ). Anyone with sweatshirt hoodies or long johns that are collecting dust, I will gladly give them to the homeless. Two huge pots of chili ( 8# hamburger, 3 #10 cans ( restaurant sized ) chili beans, 2 #10 cans of tomatoes plus pantry cans of both served with tortilla chips went as quickly as I could serve it. All saltines went quickly too. I even had a couple loaves of bread to make sandwiches for the Community Inn that homeless saw in my SUV that they requested and ate plain. Many were first time visitors to my vehicle. Lord, where do they stay? I know several who have camps along side the R.R. Tracks ( men AND women ). Others sleep in front of the Court House. ( The police tried to move them away but couldnt cuz its a public place. ) Greg, Clint, and others move from church alcoves to city garages to public parks to sleep! Good news...a lady was handing out toothbrushes although she didnt have many. She also had a large tray of sliced cakes that were a big hit. I saw her this past summer passing out deodorant, toilet paper, toothbrushes and engaging in conversation with people...she lives in Georgetown and Ive forgotten her name. Hope to see her next Thursday too. This weather is just the beginning of really difficult time for the homeless. Im afraid they will suffer a very long winter :-(
