Dowry Menace: pregnant woman forced to consume poison Srinagar, July 25: Police arrested the five members of Tangmarg family including the husband of victim for allegedly forcing a pregnant woman to take some poisonous substance. Police sources told media that a woman (name withheld) from Traran village of North Kahsmir’s Tangmarag area was married to a man namely Bilal Ali Malik from Hariwatnu Chek area. Sources added that Bilal Malik and his in-laws were frequently forcing the said woman to collect money from her father to assist them in constructing new house. “Once the woman managed to arrange money for the in-laws but this time her father was not in a position to help her, as a result she was tortured by In-Laws and was forced to take some poisonous substance,” a police official told media. The woman according to reports is battling for life in SMHS Hospital Srinagar. Police registered a case after locals staged a massive protest against the family and demanded the arrest of all the ‘erring’ family members. Reports said that the accused family members including the head Ali Muhammad Malik, his sons Shakoor Malik, Rashid Malik, Mansoor Malik and Bilal Malik went on hiding to evade their arrest, however, police launched a hunt and nabbed them. SDPO Tangmarg Anwar-ul-Haw told media that they have registered a formal case vide FIR number 63/2014 under section 409,498 of RPC against the accused family members and investigation is going on.
