Dr. Antoine Louis, together with German engineer Tobias Schmidt, built a prototype for the guillotine. Schmidt recommended using an angled blade as opposed to a round one. The Germans later mechanized it for speed. An experiment done during the French Revolution suggests that a beheaded person could live and was possibly cognisant of his/her condition for 45 seconds after beheading. The irony I see here is thati have talked to drug addicts who have O.D.ed on heroin, they spoke as if it were actually a pleasant experience. So why so much trouble with chemical executions? My personal suggestion, put the person to sleep and then rip off his head, works for me.
