Dr. Carpenters Critter Corner: Pet Insurance The cost of veterinary care is continually increasing due to the increased cost associated with equipment, facilities, and training required to provide these higher quality services. The cost of diagnosing, treating, and managing your pet’s illness or injury can quickly add up. These costs can be partially or fully covered by some pet insurances. The American Veterinary Medical Association believes insurance will be important to the veterinary profession in order to continue to provide high quality care and up to date veterinary services. Pet insurance is not like human health insurance. Pet insurance is more similar to property insurance. Most pet insurances have the policy holder first pay the bill, then the insurance company will reimburse the policy holder after they submit a claim. Be sure to ask the insurance provider how claims are processed, as well as, how long it will take for reimbursement of your expenses. The insurance provider will provide the limitations and exclusions of the policy you select. Some plans cover routine visits, as well as, illnesses or injury, while other plans are more limited. Every company has a variety of plans and options to choose from. Each company handles differently pre existing conditions, specific breeds that may be considered high risk, number of pets, and age of pets. Every plan is different and owners need to research each company and their plans to decide which, if any pet insurance is best for their pet.
