Dr. Clarke came from humble beginnings. He was born in the deep South on 1 January 1915. When he was very young he migrated to New York. He hopped a train. In New York he met people like the historian and journalist J.A. Rogers and the poet Langston Hughes. In fact, Dr. Clarke early on was a poet himself. He also either joined or was drafted into the US Army. He was an early supporter of revolutionary Cuba and lived in a slum in Accra, Ghana. He was instrumental in getting the first book of Cheikh Anta Diop into English. This was Diops work African Origins of Civilization: Myth of Reality.
