Dr Joo-Cheong Tham - associate professor at the Melbourne Law School and the author of Money and Politics: The Democracy We Can’t Afford - warns about the knee-jerk and self-serving proposals from the corporate political parties: It is far better to begin with the key objectives of a democratic political funding regime, the pathologies of the current system and then to move on to the question of reform options. A democratic political funding regime would aim to protect the integrity of representative government by preventing corruption and undue influence. More than this, it should promote fairness in politics - specially in elections - and also respect political freedoms.
