Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was surely an important figure in American history, but I dont believe even Dr. King would see the merits in using taxpayer dollars to honor him by paying city employees to take a day off. Surely Council President Kilbane would agree that our veterans are important people in American history as well, yet we dont officially honor these brave men and women by giving our city employees a paid day off every November 11th on this designated federal holiday. If certain city employees and city council truly want to acknowledge the importance of community action, perhaps they can take one of their four floating holidays to work at our senior center or food bank on MLK day.
