Dr. Nuland, who died this week, was larger than life physician. His book How We Die is a must read to all those (myself included, definitely) who contemplate their death and plan to depart from this world one of these days. It is a realistic, albeit harsh preparation of what to expect, but, mainly, what not to expect. I heard Dr. Nuland giving a talk a few years back at Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva, Israel. He was a wonderful speaker, shy, and modest but brilliant. To read now in this obituary about his early life and his roots in the South Bronx is just as fascinating as his How We Die Book. May his memory be for a blessing.
