Dr Pita Sharples disappointed me when he said that karakia was required for Maori kids to feel cultural safety. You did say all kids, Doc? Well, I remember the discomfort I felt at Avondale College, being instructed to bow my head for prayer during assemblies. What happened if a Christian teacher noticed an upstanding, ungodly head? Detention happened. It was bullshit I guess had the option of opting out. But nobody told me that, let alone how I could go about this. Powerful people in school – teachers, principals – leading religious prayer during school time is nothing but indirect coercion. The implication is one of “this is what we do; this is what we believe.” thedailyblog.co.nz/2013/07/02/trading-prayer-for-fresh-air/#sthash.7Llfw3Uo.dpuf
