Dr. Samuel Abbot Green was born in Groton, Massachusetts, to Joshua Green and Eliza Lawrence. His grandfather, Maj. Samuel Lawrence was an officer in the American Revolutionary War, and his uncles Amos and Abbott Lawrence were prominent merchants, philanthropists, and politicians. His grandmother was Susanna Parker Lawrence. Dr. Green graduated from the Lawrence Academy at Groton in 1847, and Harvard College in 1851. He commanded the hospital ship “Cosmopolitan” on the coast of South Carolina. During the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, he was chief medical officer on Morris Island. In October 1863, he was sent to Florida, and was post surgeon at St. Augustine and Jacksonville; thence he was sent to Virginia, and was with the army when Bermuda Hundred was taken. He was appointed acting staff surgeon, and was stationed three months at Richmond after its fall. For gallant and distinguished services in the field, in 1864 he was brevetted lieutenant colonel of volunteers. Dr. Green organized Roanoke Cemetery in 1862, which was one of the first regular burial places for Union Army soldiers. Dr. Green gave much time to historical studies, and for some years was been librarian of the Massachusetts Historical Society. He published a large number of papers on scientific and historical subjects. He was a descendent of Percival Green, who arrived with Rev. Thomas Parker, on the Susan and Ellen in the early 17th century.
