Dr Sarah Mares, a child and family psychiatrist, has visited Christmas Island twice this year and was consultant to the Human Rights Inquiry. She said the decrease in the numbers of children in detention was very welcome. But the length of time that most of these children have been in detention means that many of them now have developed significant anxiety and depression during their prolonged detention and will require additional support and intervention, Dr Mares said. For the younger children and the babies, many have spent their whole lives in the detention environment.
