Dr. W’s Reflections, Ramblings, and Rants... DO YOU BELIEVE THIS? “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die” (John 11:25-26). The story of Lazarus being raised from the dead (John 11:1-44) is a dramatic reminder for us today that the Lord of resurrection has now imposed “life” where there was only the prospect of death. And when Jesus encountered Martha and Mary, he declared that he was, in fact, the “resurrection” and the “life.” According to Jesus, the power to raise the dead has been vested in him. Therefore, the believer’s resurrection from the dead is guaranteed by the One who personally embodies the eternal hope of “resurrection” and “life.” “Lazarus, come out!” The raising of Lazarus from the dead was simply a preview of things to come. The raising of Lazarus was a divine sign pointing to death being destroyed at the Cross and then being swallowed up by the victory of Jesus’ own resurrection from the dead. And now, according to Jesus, a “time” is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and “come out” (John 5:28-29). “Do you believe this?”
