Dragons edge past Cave Springs in B-4 opener Dewar scores with 2:10 left to even 2013 record By LARRY OWEN Times sports editor CAVE SPRINGS - The Dewar Dragons needed almost every bit of the 48 minutes of regulation to secure their first win of the 2013 football season this past Friday night. The Dragons were trailing 38-32 late in the fourth quarter, then sophomore QB Alan Bentjen plunged into the end zone from a yard out with 2:10 remaining to knot the score at 38-38. Bentjen then crossed the goal line for the conversion to give Dewar a narrow 2-point lead, 40-38. The Dewar defense would come away with an interception - the second takeaway by the Dragon D in the game - then the Dewar offense ran out the remaining time off the game clock to preserve the 40-38, come-from-behind win over the talented Cave Springs Hornets. Not only was last Friday’s 40-38 victory the first of the season for Dewar, it was also put the Dragons atop of the B-4 district standings at 1-0, along with Wetumka, Davenport, Porum, and Strother, who will be the Dragons’ opponents in four of the next six weeks, starting with Strother this Friday night at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium in Dewar. Prior to the home opener this Friday, Dewar will host the 3rd Annual Tailgate Extravaganza, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the football field. The event will feature barbecue sandwiches and inflatables for the kids. It will also be Homecoming for Dewar on Friday with the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen to take place at 7 p.m. prior to the 7:30 p.m. kickoff. In last Friday’s district opener against Cave Springs, the host Hornets got things started in the first quarter on a 39-yard pass from Wyatt Coiner to Jason Noel. The run attempt on the conversion play was unsuccessful to make it an early 6-0 lead for Cave Springs. Alan Bentjen would get the Dragons on the board with a 16-yard run on a QB keeper. The run attempt for Dewar on the conversion try was no good, leaving the score tied at 6-6. Noel would put Cave Springs back on top by hauling in a 36-yard pass from Jae Christie, while Darius Mack, who finished with 214 yards rushing on 14 carries, knotted the score at 12-12 at the end of the first on a 28-yard scamper. All of the second quarter scoring belonged to Cave Springs, beginning with a defensive safety. Christie would make it a 20-12 contest with a 31-yard run, while Dwight Catron ran in the conversion to send the teams to the lockerrooms with the Dragons trailing 22-12 at halftime. Mack would account for all of the points in the third quarter when the sophomore tailback raced 65 yards to paydirt. The conversion try was no good to make it a 22-18 contest after three quarters of action. Catron would haul in a 5-yard pass from Coiner to begin the final quarter of action, then Christie tacked on the conversion run to put Cave Springs in front by two scores, 30-18. Alan Bentjen scored from seven yards, then found Mack on the conversion to make it a 30-26 contest. The sophomore QB then gave Dewar its first lead of the game, racing 28 yards for his third rushing TD of the game. The run attempt was no good, leaving Dewar in front 32-30. Noel would put the host Hornets back in front with a 20-yard TD run, then bounced into the end zone on the conversion try to make it a 38-32 Cave Springs lead. Bentjen would score the game-tying TD with 2:10 left in regulation with his 1-yard run. Bentjen then connected with Cole Britt on the conversion to put the Dragons in front, 40-38. Bentjen would finish with 179 yards rushing on 31 carries and 4 TDs. --- Dewar 40, Cave Springs 38 Dew - 12 - 0 - 6 - 22 (40) CS - 12 - 10 - 0 - 16 (38) First Quarter Cave Springs - Jason Noel, 39-yard pass from Wyatt Coiner (Run Failed) Dewar - Alan Bentjen, 16-yard run (Run Failed) Cave Springs - Noel, 36-yard pass from Jae Christie (Pass Failed) Dewar - Darius Mack, 28-yard run (Pass Failed) Second Quarter Cave Springs - Safety Cave Springs - Christie, 31-yard run (Dwight Catron run) Third Quarter Dewar - Mack, 65-yard run (Run Failed) Fourth Quarter Cave Springs - Catron, 5-yard pass from Coiner (Christie run) Dewar - Alan Bentjen, 7-yard run (Mack pass from Alan Bentjen) Dewar - Alan Bentjen, 28-yard run (Run Failed) Cave Springs - Noel, 20-yard run (Noel run) Dewar - Alan Bentjen, 1-yard run (Cole Britt pass from Alan Bentjen) Team Stats First Downs: Dewar 11; Cave Springs 10 Rushing: Dewar 51-413; Cave Springs 39-165 Passing: Dewar 3-8-0 15; Cave Springs 16-24-1 180 Total Yards: Dewar 428; Cave Springs 345 Penalties: Dewar 10-80; Cave Springs 11-95 Fumbles: Dewar 5-2; Cave Springs 2-1 Individual Stats Rushing: Darius Mack 14-214, 2 TDs; Alan Bentjen 31-179, 4 TDs; Mekko Watson 5-17; Cole Britt 1-3.
