Drilon as Senate president good for Iloilo – Defensor BY GLENDA SOLOGASTOA ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. sees more projects pouring into the province if Ilonggo senator Franklin Drilon becomes the Senate president. “You cannot underestimate the help and influence of the Senate president. He has the capability to give more programs and projects to Iloilo,” he said. Congress has the “power of the purse.” Nothing will happen if the Senate president blocks the approval of government programs and projects in Congress, explained, Defensor. The governor is confident that Drilon will be elected Senate president of the 16th Congress next month. The two are Liberal Party allies. Drilon is said to be the personal choice of President Benigno Aquino III to become the Senate president but the Ilonggo legislator himself said this does not immediately make him a shoo-in for the third highest post in the land. “It is not yet in the bag for me. It’s natural for people to speculate. I played a role in the campaign, worked hard and pushed for the President’s agenda. The people sent a clear message in the recent elections: Let’s continue what the President started three years ago,” Drilon told Panay News in a recent interview. The Senate “Big Man” said it is “most logical” for most people to assume he is being groomed for the Senate leadership because as he had an active role in the 2013 mid-term elections. Drilon served as the campaign manager of the administration’s Team PNoy. “I really believe in the President’s agenda. I believe, given our experience, that we can help the President. If 13 (senators) feel we can deliver the mandate we got in the last elections, I am willing to serve,” he added. At least 13 votes in the 24-member Senate are needed by one to become Senate president. Drilon had served as Senate president twice – first in 2000 and later from 2001 to 2006. If voted Senate president in July, Drilon said he is “better equipped” to handle any situation which may arise in the Senate. “You just have to understand where the senators are coming from because each senator has the mandate of at least 14 million voters,” he explained./PN
