Driving home from Grafton today and this poor fellow got caught in the windscreen wipers. Never been fortunate enough to photograph one of these beautiful butterflies in my garden, so here was my chance even though it did look a little worse for wear. Convinced Philip to stop for a photo shoot even though he was in a hurry to get home before more predicted heavy rain commenced, he was in fear of us not making it back over the rising Orara River not far from home. We could see where water had been over the road in several spots during the night. To my surprise this creature was still alive and posed nicely for a few shots. With half of its innards hanging out I asked Philip what he thought I should do with it, he said put the poor thing out of its misery. Surprisingly this little beauty seemed to perk up, swung around and looked me in the face as much as to say No way, still a bit of life in the old fellow yet. And off it flew, but cant imagine it would have been capable of flying too far, at least his death would have been more peaceful than what Philip had in mind for him. Been home a couple of hours now and the river has not risen above the bridge as yet, but it could be a different situation tomorrow if we are to receive more of the heavy rain that I have heard is heading in our direction. Only had light sprinkles off and on for the last couple of hours.
