Drunken butterflies? Filmy Angelica (Angelica triquinata) is blooming at high elevation now. The greenish-white flowers produce large quantities of nectar that is evidently intoxicating to insects. They behave crazily after visiting the flowers—buzzing in circles on the ground, unable to fly in a straight line. Sometimes they sit lazily on the plant all night long, apparently too inebriated to find their way home! Bees are most affected by the nectar, but other insects show signs of intoxication. Look for filmy angelica, and insects enjoying happy hour, along Clingmans Dome and Balsam Mountain roads. Warning: This plant is poisonous to humans.
