Dt 31:19 Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel. 20 For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant. 21 And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware. 22 Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel. 23 And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee. 24 And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, 25 That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying, 26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee. 27 For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death? 28 Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to record against them. 29 For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands. 30 And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song, until they were ended. So in the beginning of this section YHVH is still speaking & telling Moses to write down a song that He is going to teach Moses who in turn is to teach it to the people - this song is to serve as a witness or testimony against the people as God knows the future & that they will forsake Him after they get into their land & things are going well. So the same day he was told Moses wrote the song & taught it to the people. It looks like the 23rd verse is saying that Moses charged Joshua but the wording makes it look like YHVH is doing the actual speaking even if it is through Moses. thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them: and I will be with thee - Moses knows he is about to die so he knows he wont be with Joshua in the promised land; hence it makes sense that YHVH is the one doing the charging which also fits into the verse 14 where YHVH said He had a charge for Joshua - Well it was pretty much the same charge that Moses gave Joshua back in Verse 7 & 8, so it looks like Moses & YHVH are on the same page - that type of deep relationship with God is what we want, that we know what God is going to say before He says it. Well there is the possibility that even if we have a deep relationship with God we can guess wrong; hence it is never a good idea to stop praying just because you know God so well you know what He will say before you ask Him. After we read the scriptures it is easy to form a conclusion about what Gods attitude will be towards any given situation; but most times without asking we will never know Gods specific instructions about how to go about getting out of it. When you read the life of Jesus He almost never healed the same way twice; one guy He spat in the dirt & rubbed mud on the guys eyes to give him his sight & another guy He didnt even go to his house but said according to your faith so be it unto you & that persons servant was healed long distance. God is always about doing new things so it is hard for us to anticipate His moves in advance; but His attitude never changes so that is easy to predict. So it looks like Moses added the next chapter which should be the song that he was taught by YHVH to the book of the law & then gave it to the levites telling them to keep it next to the ark of the covenant if not inside it & it will be a witness against them when they fulfill their future of disobeying God. Seeing as how they were quite rebellious towards God while Moses was alive it is not hard for him to see Gods point that they will forsake Him after he dies. In the 28th verse Moses calls one more meeting with the elders calling heaven & earth to witness against them as God has shown him a future where after he dies they will disobey YHVH & bring the curses in the book against themselves as a result. Then there is a line in there about how our works can pixx God off. If we do evil we are provoking the Lord to anger with the works of our hands. So our good works cant save us, but our bad ones can pixx God off - This seems like a difficult concept for us to wrap our heads around so ima see what scriptures God is telling me fit into this part of the story - Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. - Without God giving us the power & instructions to do His will anything we attempt in the name of righteousness is actually nothing but a filthy rag. - Part of why our good works cant save us because without God giving us the guidance, our works arent good at all. Jn 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Jn 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. Col 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Jn 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. Eph 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, - Ok so the picture those verses are giving me is about how we are to be having Christ in us if we want to have a hope of glory, Jesus was praying for us to be united with God & Jesus just like they were united together & when God lives in us then He is doing the works, without Him we can do nothing; but while filled with the fulness of God, the power of God is at work in us. Enabling us to fulfill Php 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. In any case this as i may have said before is one of the hardest concepts for me to accept about the bible besides the one about how there comes a time when you have to write some people off... Every good thing i do is Gods fault (people dont like that word because of the negative connotation; but He is responsible for it) & every bad thing i do is my fault. The trippy part is i cant even blame the devil when i do something wrong, because he didnt really make me do it - he just tempted me & i followed along of my own free will. Pfft what good is the devil if i cant blame him for my mistakes? Well responsibility & accountability is something that God wants to teach us from day one - nobody can blame someone else for their actions when they are bad, but everybody has to give God glory for their actions when they are good (Mt 5:16) as we went over last time there is none good but one, that is God (Mk 10:18) so every good gift comes down from above (Js 1:17) - even when it is our good behavior. Basically there is no goodness aside from God so we need a relationship with Him to be able to tell what good is & how to go about doing it. See the bible says Isa 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! & 14 Ps 3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one. - without God in our lives nobody is running around doing any good no matter how good they may seem - so one of the first things we gotta learn when coming to Christ is that people who dont know God are not good - even if they are not running around doing things we consider crimes - when we come to God we gotta get used to using His measuring stick (the bible) & not the worlds (common sense) when it comes to measuring things like good & evil. The 30 verse says that the next chapter is the song (mentioned in the first verse 19 of this section) that YHVH taught Moses who in turn taught the people; so next time we will get into what it says & who knows how long it till take to finish it; because i get so many complaints about my sermons being long i may have to cut it up into tiny little bits... In any case until then let us pray that we have a genuine relationship with the one true God of the universe so that He can teach us what good is & help us go about doing it in our lives.
