Due to a lack of traditional studies of Islamic sciences - TopicsExpress

Due to a lack of traditional studies of Islamic sciences (specifically Fiqh [ jurisprudence]) — where one either studies in a seminary or with a scholar going through works in gradation — coupled with an eagerness to remain fundamentally true to Islam, American converts, specifically in the Blackamerican community, tend to deduce religious verdicts from their superficial understanding of religious legislation (i.e., the Quran and Sunnah). The problem with this, is that it typically leads to a puritanical practice of Islam with an unwillingness to accept of different opinions and, even worse, pontification that one emphatically knows the legislation of God and everyone else is incorrect. Therefore, imbedding arrogance, intolerance, and division into the minds of our communities constituents. Via traditional studies, especially when done through a particular school of thought (i.e., madhhab), one is not only given an authentic chain of scholarly understanding back to the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, but one is taught proper critical thinking along with a respect for the jurist of the past and how they derived verdicts. So long as one doesnt become fanatical, this discipline gives one humility, tolerance, and an understanding as to why the Prophet ﷺ said, Surely this religion is easy. May Allah bless us all with pure intentions, beneficial knowledge, righteous actions, beautiful character, and prophetic wisdom. Ameen!
