Due to inclement weather, all Anne Arundel County Public Schools - TopicsExpress

Due to inclement weather, all Anne Arundel County Public Schools and offices will be closed today (3-17-14). A Code Red is in effect for employees. Unit III personnel must report to their work locations as required. Because of todays closing, the participation of AACPS schools in the Regional MESA Competition at Johns Hopkins University is canceled. Todays closing means that AACPS has closed nine times for inclement weather this school year. The Board-approved calendar built in four days, meaning AACPS must -- in the absence of the granting of a state waiver -- make up five days to satisfy the states 180-school-day requirement. The Maryland State Department of Education asked school systems last week to submit their waiver requests, and AACPS requested a waiver of four days. That, of course, preceded todays weather event. AACPS plans to submit an additional waiver request for today. The Board-approved calendar stipulates that any additional days will be added to the end of the school year. As it stands now, in the absence of any waiver, the last day of school for students will be Wednesday, June 25. This is because schools must be closed on Tuesday, June 24, for primary elections. AACPS will communicate the decision on the waiver requests as soon they are received. Please note that the granting of waiver requests impacts the length of the school year for students only. The granting of a waiver request does not impact the contracted work year for teachers or other employees. Decisions on the contracted length of the work year for impacted employees are made separately from the waiver requests to MSDE.
