Duluth Mayor Don Ness gets a brief mention in this NPR article on why some politicians turn down free money. In his post on his FB page he explains his decision to turn down a city council-backed pay raise late last year. Comments from constituents bring the conversation back to the question whether the Mayor will seek re-election when his term is up. What are your thoughts? The Mayors post: This story showed up on NPR this morning. Its kind of funny to read the comments from folks around the country making assumptions of why I didnt take the raise including: independently wealthy (ha), running for Congress (absolutely not), son of Tom Hanks (yes, a resemblance to Colin Hanks, but no relation), or must be worried about an upcoming election (that must be it). My decision not to accept the raise was not altruism or trying to make some big political point. In this job, I just want to do as much as I possibly can to make Duluth a better city. If I had accepted the raise, I feel pretty confident it would have compromised my work toward that goal. From a professional basis, thats all I care about - no regrets. The thing that Im most appreciative of is that the people of Duluth have supported me over all these years - through a lot of mistakes and growing pains. So, thanks for that. Thanks for understanding how I try to approach this job and your support through the tough times. Thats why Im not interested in higher office - because you simply cant maintain that sort of relationship with an entire state or congressional district. Anyway, enough of that - it looks like a beautiful day on our pretty little city built on a hillside. Enjoy!
