Durant, Okla. - The pressure mounts as the final stretch of the season begins for the Oklahoma Panhandle State University Rodeo Team and both the mens and womens teams are tending to their respective goals. For the men, it is simply a matter of keeping the first place position. The ladies however, are in pursuit of one of the two top spots in the Central Plains Region. At the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Rodeo held April 3-5, the OPSU men clenched the team title once again while the women were second overall. Leading the Panhandle State ladies in their strongest showing of the season was junior Mercedes Trenary. Trenary split second and third place in the long round of the breakaway roping with teammate Kashly Schweer. The pair of OPSU cowgirls stopped the clock with 3.0-second runs Friday morning. After difficulty in the short go, the duo wound up fourth and fifth in the average race as well. Terra Micek also qualified for the championship round. Trenary qualified for Saturday nights short round in the goat tying as well. The womens all-around champion was fourth in the first round of competition and fifth in average race. She was joined by Laremi Allred who held the fastest time of the long round through two performances. The Utah-native finished fifth in the long round, third in the short go and fourth in the average. For the men, Joe Frost paved the path. In regular-fashion, the all-around talent was a busy man during the short round Saturday night. He started his evening at the roping box for the tie down roping and steer wrestling. Frost placed third in the long round of the tie down roping with a 10.0-second run. He placed fifth overall. He was joined by several teammates. Caleb Bullock is inching closer to the top spot in the region with another solid performance in Durant. Bullock qualified in the eighth position, then had a great birthday with the fastest time of the short go Saturday night to land him in third place in the average. Josh Frost and Matthew Armes also qualified in the tie down roping. In the steer wrestling, Joe Frost was all business. After slipping into the championship round in the final slot, he made the fastest run of the short round to land in a tie for second and third place in the average with teammate Shade Etbauer. Joe Frost finished his night at the bucking chutes where he placed third in the short go and third overall in the bull riding. He was joined by a slew of red and blue vests behind the chutes. Kane Larsen had the highest-marked ride of the weekend during the long round of competition with a score of 81 points. Tyler Hessman placed third in the first round as well. Jeff Bertus was able to make the eight-second whistle twice during the weekend to finish in second place in the average. The Panhandle State dominance continued at the bucking chutes in the saddle bronc riding. Joe Harper walked away the top cowboy of the classic event with consistent marks of 72 and 70 points. Etbauer rounded out his night with a third place finish in the saddle bronc riding. He was followed by Preston Kafka in fourth and Justin Miller in sixth. Nat Stratton, Audy Reed and Blaze Cress also qualified for the championship round. In the bareback riding, Logan Glendy split second and third place overall while his teammate and traveling partner Wesley Cole landed in fourth for the weekend. The team will have a short break in Goodwell before heading south once again for the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Rodeo April 10-12.
