Durban recognised as the fourth ‘tweetiest’ city in Africa, with Joburg on top 13 Mar 2014 Witness Reporter DURBAN has been recognised as the fourth “tweetiest” city in Africa. According to a survey — How Africa Tweets — done by Portland Communications, Durban was ranked fourth on the continent, with 163019 geo-located tweets between October and December 2013 on the popular social network Twitter. Durban came behind Johannesburg, the Ekurhuleni area and Cairo in Egypt. Johannesburg was found to be the African city with the busiest Twitter users, with 344215 tweets during the period, Ekurhuleni with 264172 and Cairo with 227509. The study by Portland also found that Twitter activity in Africa peaked on the day former president Nelson Mandela died. “The day of Nelson Mandela’s death — December 5 — saw the highest volume of geo-located tweets in Africa,” it said. According to the survey, the Mother City featured on the list at number seven, with 83818 geo-located tweets. The study also found that English, French and Arabic were the most common languages on Twitter in Africa, accounting for 75,5% of the total tweets analysed. Zulu, Swahili, Afrikaans, Xhosa and Portuguese were the next most commonly tweeted languages on the continent. Tuesdays and Fridays were found to be the most active tweeting days, with Twitter activity rising steadily through the afternoon and evening, peaking around 9pm. It was also found that soccer was the most discussed topic on Twitter in Africa. “[Soccer] was discussed more than any other topic, including the death of Nelson Mandela. The most mentioned [soccer] team was Joburg’s Orlando Pirates.” Politically-related hash tags were less common. Allan Kamau, head of Portland Nairobi, said the “Twittersphere” was transforming the way that Africa communicated with itself and the rest of the world. “Our latest research reveals a significantly more sophisticated landscape than we saw just two years ago,” he said. “This is opening up new opportunities and challenges for companies, campaigning organisations, and governments across Africa.” Top trending terms related to “Durban” over the last 12 months: 1.
