During New Moon or when the moon is hidden behind the other side of the Earth (Day time), we are not totally without light from the sky. It is because the Universe is all too bright from the travelling waves ( light, electro-mech, pulsar, gamma waves) are transposing light we can use at night.There is always panoramic scenery of exploding Nova above where we can are lighted here. Yet is is possible that our overhead is too dark or consequentially no available waves at the that moment and we really feel the pitch-night. This is called Bulgeless Night.
