During his visit to Yorkshire yesterday Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Eric Pickles confirmed that his order to allow members of the public to film council meetings will become law within TWO WEEKS. This will apply to all councils and to all meetings which the public can attend. It is sad that ERYC have held out until being forced to change and we are yet to see what further obstacles they invent. This reflects very badly on our Council and particularly on Cllr Parnabys proud to be out of touch Conservative Group who so vehemently resisted the change. Their attitude towards the public accountability is apauling. As was their use of a 2004 report relating to a defunct experimental system from a company no longer in business to justify ridiculously inflated costs It is their behaviour which demonstrated to the SOS that councils would not change without legislation. Mockingly voting down a Labour motion to allow filming and being shown to be the most secretive council in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in the Taxpayers Alliance report which was written by Andrew Allison to support our campaign and which Mr Pickles cited to justify the change in the Law. We can now look forward to filming posting our recordings and repeat our call for ERYC to now film and Broadcast their meting themselves. We dont want to hear any more dodgy figures from Cllrs Chadwick and their conservative colleagues over the cost. Scarborough BC can do it for under £20k is the mighty ERYC so incapable of matching their Borough neighbours. Well done to all our members who signed our petition.
