During hurricane sandy, I had been driving through New York into Pennsylvania with a rooftop cargo racked onto my car. The weather forced me west into the Pocono mountains to hunker down, worried that the wind would pull off the plastic storage or make the car veer from the force if I kept going. I was the only one tenting it in a campground. A mama bear and 3 cubs appeared on the dirt road in front of me. I stayed still as she crossed, in awe not fear, even though they get aggressive protecting their young. Only one thing terrified me, one of the very very few times perhaps the only time, my fear was ever that strong, I had chills go down my spine in response to the sounds of a high pitched pack of ??? hunting at night. Every night I stayed, they were close with an almost yodeling weird cry. First time, grabbed a thick long tentpole from my tent to arm myself with when night time bladder signaled. After that, tupperware inside to avoid sharing wide open space with whatever they were. Yes, a tent is very flimsy protection but better than nothing. Had seen what looked like a coyote for coloring, but thicker and larger during the day. Familiar with wolves, I knew that it wasnt one despite its hunting in packs. Coyote are more solitary. Feral crossbreed dogs came to mind. Now I know its a CoyWolf, a super predator. Not afraid of humans, aggressive, surround and take down and not above doing so to a solitary human. My instinctive fear thats absent with spiders, snakes, and other creatures kept me safe curled up with the sleeping bag over my head and a knife by my side. No problem twerking a tiger, but not up to an encounter with these : cracked/article_18912_6-animals-humanity-accidentally-made-way-scarier_p2.html
