During my IIT days, a friend (not a very close one) came to my room the night before the end-term exam and wanted to talk to me. I had to cram through the night for the exam the next day but something about him made me leave that behind and go to the terrace to talk. He then launched into a discussion about his life and how he was re-evaluating things. Again, my natural impulse would have been to ask: Cant this wait one more day? But we sat on and talked till the morning. Three weeks later, I realized that he was on the verge of getting probation for poor performance. He fell behind in some courses, gradually improved his performance and is doing well in life today. Nearly a year down the road, during my last few months at IIT, he told me one day that he had been preparing for suicide that night, in his room. For some reason, he decided he needed to talk it out before ending his life. But he was also sure that given the exam time, no one would spare that amount of time. Had you not talked to me that night, I wouldnt be here. I still smile every time I think of those words. He was still struggling academically when he told me about all of this. His life hadnt improved. There was no fairy tale ending. But I feel incredibly happy that I actually saved someones life. I didnt have to invest much but I do feel incredibly happy about it.
