During my eight years at VMware, I had the privilege of working with Cary on numerous projects. What has always struck me about her is her natural ability to be a broker of compromise. Let’s face it – anyone who has worked in Silicon Valley knows that it is a wonderful and dynamic professional environment, but often it is also one where tensions run high and agendas compete. Cary is a master of cutting through the noise to collaborate and make sure everyone comes out on top – a winner in the truest sense of the word, looking after the needs of the team, not just her own. What has always struck me even more, though, is her affability and welcoming demeanor with people she might see only once or twice a year. Being based on opposite coasts has never interfered with the warm hug and smile I get from her at every company function – as though we’ve been friends since we were kids. It’s sad to see Carys train depart for the next station so abruptly and far too early. But clearly she has made, and still makes, a long-lasting impression on all who encounter her. RIP – we’ve lost a star down here, but another now glows up high.
