During one of my recent clinics, I was pleased that one of my patients reported that the light went on for him. He was feeling guilty for accepting help from others. He felt he SHOULD be able to do it all for himself and hated being a burden. I reminded him that lots of people feel good by helping others in need. He does too. It suddenly made perfect sense that it was ok to need help and that in doing so, he was actually helping someone else feel good. So, I added this to the list of potential rational responses, in addition to a few others today... 1. Feeling guilty about getting help from others? Did you know that lots of people feel good by helping others? Don’t feel badly about getting help. You could be actually helping someone else feel better. 2. Spending time or money that you think is a waste? You’re probably helping someone else by doing so, and contributing to the local economy. 3. Just because you can’t see a perspective at first doesn’t mean its not there. Look closer. Move away from black and white thinking by turning the lights on to see what you’re missing. 4. New ways of thinking won’t find you if you just stay in bed. Get up and go out and look for them. Dr. K
